screenshotExclusive. Yahoo buys Webjay for an as yet undisclosed sum. The announcement will come sometime today so expect posts on the Yahoo blog (and inevitably from Zawodny).

Webjay is a tool that helps you listen to and publish web playlists.

MP3 players like WinAmp, iTunes, RealOne, and Windows Media Player can be given a list of songs to play. Most of the time the songs are on your computer, but they can also be on the web. Webjay is all about playlists of songs on the web.

Webjay was started by Lucas Gonze as a way for sharing music playlists. Lucas (currently based in Hawaii) will relocate to California to join the mothership in Santa Clara Santa Monica.

Luca pored his heart and soul into Webjay and really deserves this. In true Web 2.0 fashion he took zero funding and did this out of love (I could only be so lucky with TailRank).

This shows that Yahoo both cares about the small guy and sees that playlists are a strong way forward.

More as Lucas and Yahoo update their blogs…

Update: O’Reilly Radar also picked up on this.

Update 2: Jeremy announces it and it’s also available on the Yahoo Music blog.

Update 3: Interview with Lucas. I’m sure he’s having a good day :)
